Fort Lauderdale resident Linda Trethewey recently traded a long drive to Miami Shores each day for an even longer one to West Palm Beach, when she became the middle school principal at Rosarian Academy at the start of the school year.

Trethewey comes from a family of educators. “Teaching is in our DNA,” she says. The switch to Rosarian from St. Rose of Lima School where she taught, served as an administrator and as the school’s curriculum director, has been a delightful one, she says, and promises to get better yet.

QUESTION: So why did you get into teaching?

ANSWER: My dad was a strong influence in becoming a teacher. He was a chemistry teacher, an author for Barron’s and a high school principal for 30-plus years. My two sisters are both in education. One is a guidance counselor in Virginia and my twin sister is an accounting professor at Washington & Jefferson College in Pennsylvania.

Q: What has kept you in the education profession?

A: Teachers wear so many hats; they are asked to be master teachers, technology technicians, counselors and role models. I have always enjoyed technology and we are still at the preface of how technology will continue to transform the educational environment.

Q: Why did you come to Rosarian?

A: One of the things that influenced my move to Rosarian Academy was not only the Catholic school and its rigorous academic environment but also the concept of riding the Brightline to work each day. The Broward station is so close to our home in Fort Lauderdale and the station in West Palm Beach is blocks from Rosarian. The start date has been delayed, but I look forward to this no-stress commute.

Q: You’re married and mom to four children. What’s your idea of a perfect vacation?

A: My ideal vacation at this point would be to go to Hawaii. Our son, a U.S. Navy officer, has just recently been stationed at Pearl Harbor. So Christmas in Hawaii might be in the cards for us.

Q. You work, you’re a wife, mom and a doctoral student. What do you do with the little spare time you have?

A: I enjoy cheering on my hometown teams from Pittsburgh. We are avid Steelers, Penguins and Pirates fans.
